Although the volcano is currently in a dormant phase, the region still offers plenty of exciting activities. Arrive at Arenal Observatory Lodge for an overnight stay. Perched on a ridge facing Costa Rica's most iconic volcano, this rustic lodge provides adventurous travelers with access to a private nature reserve. Explore miles of hiking trails in search of hidden waterfalls and over 500 bird species. The lodge also features a spacious swimming pool, a serene spa, and a restaurant with stunning volcano views. Please note that the Observatory Lodge is in a secluded, natural setting, about 30 minutes from Arenal's main roads. The hotel concierge can assist with booking off-site tours, taxi services, restaurant reservations, and more.
Day 2
Rio Balsa Whitewater Rafting Class II-III
The Balsa River offers an exciting mix of Class II and III rapids, catering to both novice paddlers and those seeking a challenge. Like many rivers in Costa Rica’s Northern Zone, the Balsa features continuous Class III rapids with small pools in between during the first half, while the second half transitions to gentler rapids, perfect for wildlife spotting. Flowing through the lowland rainforest, the river provides breathtaking views of nature, where you may encounter tropical birds and other wildlife in the lush jungle surrounding the river. Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge.
Day 3
Afternoon Arenal Sloth Tour
The sweet, smiling face of the Costa Rican sloth has quickly become an iconic symbol of the country’s incredible rainforest wildlife. The Arenal region is renowned for its biodiversity, including two distinct sloth species: the two-toed and three-toed sloths. During your adventure, you’ll also have the opportunity to spot toucans and the vibrant blue jean dart frog. As you search for these fascinating creatures, your guide will take you through La Fortuna’s best wildlife viewing spots, where you may also encounter birds, iguanas, and monkeys. Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge.

Your journey begins with a ground transfer to the boat launch at Arenal Dam, where you'll board a boat for a scenic 45-minute ride across Lake Arenal to the Rio Chiquito dock. Next, explore the history of the cacao pod and make your own chocolate using time-honored recipes. You'll also experience the traditional Costa Rican process of extracting sugar cane juice with a trapiche. After sampling your creations, you'll understand why coffee and chocolate are integral to the country’s culture and cuisine. Overnight at Monteverde Lodge.
