Transfer to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui; Birding Tour
Upon arrival into San Jose, Costa Rica transfer approximately 3 hours to Selva Verde Lodge. The lodge is known as being the pioneer of the ecotourism movement in Costa Rica. This is a haven for bird watchers, nature enthusiasts, and hikers. Located nearby is the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, where guests can visit restaurants and shops.
Upon arrival you will go on a private guided bird walk at La Selva Organization for Tropical Studies. This research station has keen-eyed guides, so you'll be sure to get a close-up view of birds you might not see otherwise!
Cinco Ceibas Adventure Park
The Cinco Ceibas Rainforest Adventure Park covers over 2,700 acres of private nature reserve. Visit the boardwalk in the morning. After lunch, choose one of the three activities: a guided kayaking excursion on Rio Cuarto River, horseback riding through the rainforest, or an Oxcart Tour. Overnight Selva Verde Lodge.
Transfer to Turrialba, Cartago Province
Today transfer approximately 4 hours to Rancho Naturalista, one of the premier Costa Rica birding lodges, in the Cartago Province for overnight. A variety of birds, including several species of hummingbirds, can be seen right from your balcony. Views of the distant Turrialba Volcano and gourmet dining are other highlights of the lodge.
CATIE Local Birding Tour
The C.A.T.I.E. Tour, or Centro Agronomico Tropical de Investigacion y Ensenanza, is a 2 hour tour - about 30 minutes from Rancho. You won't find the aquatic birds that inhabit CATIE at Rancho Naturalista. Boat-billed Herons, Purple Gallinules, and the secretive Green Ibises are just some of the aquatic birds that can be found here. Overnight Rancho Naturalista.
Quetzal's Paradise Tour
This full day tour to the highlands of the Dota region of Costa Rica, about 3 hours from Rancho Naturalista, is perfect for those dying to see the Resplendent Quetzal bird. Explore this Quetzal paradise with a professional naturalist guide. A vast array of tropical highland birds also inhabit this region, including the Fiery Throated Hummingbird. Transfer to Tortuguero National Park
Today, you will be met and transferred by ground about 3 hours to Pavona Dock before boating about 2-4 hours to Tortuguero National Park on the Northern Caribbean Coast. Be on the lookout for the animals and bird species that reside in the backwater creeks of Tortuguero. Arrive at Tortuga Lodge and Gardens for overnight. The afternoon is free to schedule additional tours.
Tortuguero Boat Tour
After breakfast at the lodge, go on a morning boat tour of Tortuguero National Park. Your naturalist guide will point out the unique wildlife and ecosystems of the park. Return back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, tour the village of Torgueruo. You will also be able to visit the town of San Francisco de la Barra de Tortuguero. Overnight Tortuga Lodge.
Transfer to Monteverde Cloud Forest
This morning, enjoy breakfast at the lodge before transferring to the local domestic airport for a flight to San Jose. Upon arrival in San Jose, you will transfer by ground approximately 3 hours to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The dense vegetation of this high-elevation cloud forest is great for wildlife observation - particularly bird watching. Overnight at Monteverde Lodge - one of the best lodges in the area, with beautiful gardens that attract regional birds. Upon arrival at the lodge, arrange a private dinner in the butterfly gardens for a truly unique dining experience.
AM Monteverde Reserve Hike; PM Bat Jungle Tour
This morning, explore the unique flora and fauna of Costa Rica's most beloved cloud forest, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. A professional naturalist guide will point out birds and other wildlife unique to this specific ecosystem. Be on the lookout for the Resplendent Quetzal, a rare beauty known to inhabit Monteverde. After the hike, grab a coffee and snack in the hummingbird garden.
This afternoon, go on the Bat Jungle Tour. This exhibit provokes a new appreciation for the often misunderstood creatures of the night. The bat jungle has more than 40 live bats of 7 species in a huge flight space designed to look like a tropical cloud forest at night. You can watch the bats visit the feeders for fruit and nectar from behind a glass enclosed viewing area. Overnight Monteverde Lodge.
Santa Elena Reserve Hike
The Santa Elena Reserve is one of the hidden treasures of Monteverde. As it isn't as popular as the Monteverde Reserve, you are less likely to run into other groups out on the trails. This is one of the first community-managed reserves in the country, and together with several other conservation areas it creates a continuous preserve of about 69,000 acres. The rest of the afternoon is free. Overnight Monteverde Lodge.
Transfer to San Jose
Today you will be met and transferred approximately 3 hours back to the capital city of San Jose for overnight at the San Jose Marriott hotel. This beautiful colonial-style hacienda is surrounded by a 30 acre coffee plantation and the Central Valley.
Depart San Jose, Costa Rica
This morning transfer to the San Jose International Airport for your return flight home.
