Trip Overview:
Daily Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive at Lomas del Volcan, Arenal Volcano
Upon your morning or afternoon arrival in San Jose, meet your driver for transfer by ground approximately 3 hours to the Arenal Volcano area.
Arrive at Lomas del Volcan for overnight. Set at the base of Arenal Volcano, Lomas del Volcán features private bungalows with stunning views of the surrounding rainforest and volcanic slopes. Guests can explore the exclusive Los Congos Trail, relax by the pool and jacuzzi, or rejuvenate with a spa treatment. After a day of adventure, enjoy a flavorful meal at Hojarasca Restaurant or unwind with a drink at La Arboleda Bar.
Day 2
Arenal Hanging Bridges Tour
Explore the Arenal Hanging Bridges, an award-winning ecotourism reserve dedicated to rainforest conservation and wildlife observation. Spanning nearly 250 hectares of tropical forest, this private reserve is home to a dazzling array of birds, animals, and exotic plants. Wander along scenic trails that connect 8 fixed bridges and 6 hanging bridges, giving you a rare opportunity to walk through the forest canopy itself. Feeling adventurous? Extend your hike to include the waterfall trail for an even closer look at this lush ecosystem.

Day 3
Rio Balsa Whitewater Rafting (Class II-III)
Experience the Balsa River, a scenic whitewater route featuring Class II and III rapids—perfect for both first-time rafters and those seeking a fun challenge. The river’s upper section offers continuous action with rolling Class III rapids and brief calm pools between runs, while the lower stretch slows down, allowing for wildlife spotting along the rainforest banks. Set in the lush lowlands near Arenal, the Balsa River delivers both thrills and breathtaking scenery, with chances to glimpse tropical birds and rainforest mammals along the way.

Day 4
Arenal Sky Tram & Trek Canopy Zipline
Begin your adventure aboard the Sky Tram, an open-air gondola offering sweeping views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal as you ascend through the forest canopy. At the top, step out onto a panoramic observation platform—the highest point in the Arenal Reserve—where your guides will provide a quick safety briefing before you launch into the treetops. The Sky Trek features a network of eight zip lines stretching a combined 4.5 miles, with runs ranging from 100 to 2,460 feet long and soaring up to 660 feet above the forest floor. It’s an unforgettable way to experience Arenal’s rainforest from a whole new perspective.

With your naturalist guide, explore La Fortuna’s best wildlife viewing areas in search of these gentle creatures. Along the way, keep an eye out for toucans, blue-jean dart frogs, iguanas, monkeys, and a variety of tropical birds.
After a break with a traditional Costa Rican snack, your adventure continues with a guided night walk through the only natural frog sanctuary in La Fortuna. As the forest comes alive after dark, spot some of the 28 frog species that inhabit the Arenal Oasis ponds, from tiny glass frogs to vibrant red-eyed tree frogs. The walk continues along easy forest trails, where your guide will help you discover the sounds and sights of the rainforest at night.
